Description

I shudder to confess that this picture was inspired by a song by Coldplay. I am not a Coldplay fan, but the song "Trouble" has always made me think of Amity, the character here. She means to do well, but very often stuffs things up and leaves herself (and sometimes others) in a big mess. There's one particular part in the story when she feels very, very low about this. It seems everything she touches breaks, and everyone she approaches she hurts, and at that moment, she's quite afraid of herself. She feels trapped within her own mistakes. I wanted to work through those feelings in a picture.

Something looks 'unfinished' about this. I wanted the colours to be flat and stark, to drum up the despair of the pic. Do they work? I dunno. Maybe I shall do a better version of this when I work out how. There's no particular symbolism on the dress-- was going to be a wedding dress, but that didn't exactly fit.

The lyrics that gave me the idea are below...

Oh no, I see
a spiderweb is tangled up with me
and I lost my head
and thought of all the stupid things I'd said

oh no, what's this?
a spiderweb and I'm caught in the middle
so I turned to run
and thought of all the stupid things I'd done

and I never meant to cause you trouble
and I never never meant to do your wrong
ah, well if I ever caused you trouble
oh no I never meant to do you harm

oh no, I see
a spiderweb and it's me in the middle
so I twist and turn
but here am I in my little bubble

singing and I never meant to cause you trouble
and I never meant to do you wrong
ah, well if I ever caused you trouble
oh no I never meant to do you harm

they spun a web for me
they spun a web for me
they spun a web for me

love this one - I wouldn't say it looks unfinished, I think it'd be better if the shadows were like single brush strokes and not like pencil sketchy lines... not sure if I said it right but you know what I mean. and I just live red, white and black combination (back at high school these three were the only colours I wore :P)
sorry to be slow with your prize pic btw - just got back from Scotland last night, got loads to do but I'll do it soon I promise :)
